Turning Innovation into Impact: Red Deer Polytechnic’s Energy Innovation Fair – Canadian Energy News, Top Headlines, Commentaries, Features & Events

On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) will host the Energy Innovation Fair, an event designed to bridge the gap between emerging energy concepts and real-world implementation. Set against the backdrop of Alberta’s evolving energy landscape, it serves as a collaborative platform for industry leaders, researchers, municipalities and entrepreneurs to discuss the development and adoption of sustainable energy solutions.
The Energy Innovation Fair highlights Alberta’s position as a hub of innovation, leveraging deep expertise in traditional sectors to lead in areas such as renewable energy technology, carbon capture and the circular economy. Attendees will engage with a comprehensive program featuring keynote speakers from Emissions Reduction Alberta and ATB Financial, as well as panel discussions focused on regulatory pathways and de-risking the scale-up of energy technologies. The day will conclude with the Green Gala Awards, held in the Alternative Energy Lab (AEL), to celebrate excellence in advancing sustainability within the province.
Central to RDP’s involvement in the event is the work of its Energy Innovation Centre (EIC). Established in 2019, the EIC has positioned RDP as a leader in emerging energy technology by creating practical, industry-grounded solutions through applied research and education. The Centre operates as both a physical and virtual hub, utilizing the campus infrastructure – including nearly 4,200 solar panels, a combined heat and power unit, heat pumps, geothermal and battery storage – to validate emerging energy systems through simulation and lab testing.
A core component of the EIC is the Campus Energy Living Lab (CELL), which utilizes the Polytechnic’s buildings to test new technologies in real-world circumstances. Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Associate Vice President of Applied Research at RDP, emphasizes the practical nature of this work: “The Living Lab is more than just a research project. We help industry to de-risk their investment in sustainable energy systems by offering a space where they can explore emerging net zero technologies before implementing them.”
RDP’s commitment to environmental responsibility is formalized through its Green Campus Master Plan, which sets an ambitious goal of achieving a net-zero campus by 2041. The EIC supports this vision by translating research findings into best practices that can be adopted by other commercial buildings and industries. Through education, training and strategic partnerships – including its collaboration with ReThink Red Deer for this event – the Polytechnic actively contributes to the energy literacy of the broader community.
By fostering an environment where students, staff and industry partners collaboratively solve technical challenges, the EIC ensures that the future workforce is equipped with the competencies required to support energy innovation. Industry members and residents are encouraged to attend the Energy Innovation Fair to explore these emerging technologies and connect with the researchers driving these advancements.
